Okay....this is....well..just please bear with me.
I was talking to an online friend who's Norwegian, and a fellow fan-person. He had signed up on that CouchSurfers site, where people around the world connect with each other to pretty much sleep on each others couches while on out of country trips and the likes.
Tonight he has a guy from New Jersey snoring away on his couch. No problems.
But as our conversation about the whole thing continues he keeps making jabs at the guy for being American, and he knows I am American as well. Admittedly he had been drinking.
The whole thing started off because he claims American whiskey can only be drunk with coke(jack specifically), and that Scot and Irish Whisky(no e cause its not made from corn...thus its real whisky). I rolled with it.
More jabs at Americans. He said when he went as stayed with some of his couchsurfing buddies here in the U.S., he would bring forth a revolution and cure us of our ignorance, though he would stay away from L.A. and Texas so he wouldn't catch "stupid".
His "curing Americans of ignorance" got to me. I just sat there staring at the screen, completely dumbfounded. I was speechless and couldn't type a bit. He went on for a little bit off tangent.
I came back with "Ignorance is not relegated to any one country, race, or people." He said "That's True." Yet my mind was screaming "Hypocrite!"
Then he made it a point to remind me that he had been drinking and was pretty sloshed. I told him to go to bed.
I was getting pissed, was still shocked, and a feeling of dissapointment stayed with me. He said he didn't want to leave the American alone, and that his cat didn't know english, and would probably be confused after she woke up from her "kip".
He fucking defined "kip" for me.
I told him regardless of what others think of Americans, most of us do know a kip is a nap.
Then he said how he got pretty philosophical and political when he was three sheets to the wind, and that he was going to get some milk to sober up.
I said, "Yea, cause that hole you're digging is gettin' pretty deep."
After a while he finally got off to get some sleep.
And here I am still a bit pissed, a whole lot of dissapointed, and slightly bewildered.
And for the life of me, I really can't think of anything the People, NOT that upper 1%, of America have done to deserve such disdain from the rest of the world.
He made a comment, after his ignorance one, about us not caring, about not living up to expectations, he actually said not being all you can be.
I told him,"Uh..no...we're just trying to live."
Well, my friends. What do you think of this SNAFU? |

I agree with Yaish. To expand, a lot of the ill feelings, IMHO, is because of the way the world press reports the news. Each country has its own agenda. Usually, its to move up in the world rankings. What better way to move up than to tear down those ahead of you?
That being said, whether he actually believes his BS or not, its clear that he does not have the social skills and graces one would expect people from a superior country to possess. |

| What are you most shocked at? Is it that someone you thought you knew is stupid? That they drunkenly confided these beliefs to you, an American? Or is the idea itself disgusting? |

I think the former and the latter more then the middle. In my experience regardless of what people say sober, alcohol doesn't exactly hide truth, especially when the said intoxicated is on a roll.
I know academically he is not stupid, just socially stupid, as was revealed to me. That's a given.
It did disgust me, the whole thing, that people can be so stupid. |

| Euro-trash totally cancel out any of the negatives we may have here. Remind him of this the next time you talk with him. |

| You might also remind him that anyone claiming to be so 'superior' wouldn't offer to invite someone into their home then speak negatively about them behind their back. |

Or just call him a nutty Viking and that his people owe the world apologies and reparation for their centuries of wanton murder, rapine and depredation.
Better still, tell him that we Americans can at least hold our drink a helluva lot better than those pussy Norse! Also, tell him that REAL boozers drink Tequila!!!
or maybe not! |

| most people who aren't american get all their exposure from the media... we are what the media says we are. Basically... picture everyone here watching Fox news and believing every word... that's basically what they are. |

When I was in The Netherlands, I watched a documentary about Iraq and the war. Long story short, one of the American press people (CNN or Fox)
actually paid and gave some people the American flag... to burn. Also with some instructions to shout how they hate America. Very disturbing.
In Afhanistan they burned the Dutch flag, but got a hold of the French one instead. Now that was funny!! |
