I was watching through my collection of Full Metal Alchemist just now (yes, i'm a geek... move on)... well, i just noticed in the beginning, in the part where Al is reciting the First Rule of Alchemy and zooming into the picture, there's a book on the desk called "Golden Dawn" (well... all you actually see is "...lden Dawn", but i filled in the rest with logic). Curiosity made me wonder, so after a google and a wiki, i came up with this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermetic_Order_of_the_Golden_Dawn
| Quote: | The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (or, more commonly, the Golden Dawn) was a magical order of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, practicing a form of theurgy and spiritual development. It was probably the single greatest influence on twentieth century western occultism. Concepts of magic and ritual that became core elements of many other traditions, including Wicca,[1][2] Thelema and other forms of magical spirituality popular today, are drawn from the Golden Dawn tradition.
The three founders, Dr. William Robert Woodman, William Wynn Westcott, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers were Freemasons and members of Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.),[3] an appendant body to Freemasonry. Westcott, also a member of the Theosophical Society, appears to have been the initial driving force behind the establishment of the Golden Dawn.
Influences on Golden Dawn concepts and work include: Christian mysticism, Qabalah, Hermeticism, the religion of Ancient Egypt, Theurgy, Freemasonry, Alchemy, Theosophy, Eliphas Levi, Papus, Enochian magic, and Renaissance grimoires. |

| Quote: | | The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Inc. is a 501(c) non-profit organization associated with a modern magical Order of the same name. While bearing the same name as the historical Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (1888-1908), the modern Order does not have direct descent or institutional lineage from the original Order. According to author Gerald Suster, this Order is notable for having the only working Golden Dawn temple in the United States at the end of the 1970s,[1] making it the oldest continuously operating Golden Dawn offshoot in the US. |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Source_Order_of_the_Golden_Dawn
| Quote: | | The Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn (OSOGD) is a Pagan community and initiatory teaching Order that draws upon the knowledge, experience, practices and spirit of the system of magical training and attainment developed by the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. |

| Quote: | We the Brethren of the Rosicrucian Inner Order bestow our Greeting, Love and Prayers upon each and everyone who reads this, our Golden Dawn Manifesto.
On the Vernal Equinox, 22nd day of March Anno Domini 2001, the Greatly Honoured Chiefs of the Inner Order, The Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum, have established The Order of the Golden Dawn ® in the Outer unto the Glory of God (Blessed be He!) the Vast and Mighty One. Through such an establishment may our Temples manifest, by means of Initiatory Currents and Transmissions, the Western Mystery Traditions which lead the aspirant to a perfect communion with his Highest Self.
For the whole intention of the Lower Mysteries, or of external initiation, is by the intervention of the Symbol, Ceremonial, and Sacrament, so to lead the Soul that it may be withdrawn from the attraction of matter and delivered from the absorption therein, whereby it walks in somnambulism, knowing not whence it cometh nor whither it goeth; and seeing also, that thus withdrawn, the Soul by true direction must be brought to study of Divine Things, that it may offer the only clean Oblation and acceptable sacrifice, which is Love expressed towards God, Man and the Universe. Now, therefore, we confess and testify thereto, from the Heptagonal Chamber of our College, and we promise, so far as in us lies, to lead the aspirant by the Rites of our Order, faithfully conserved, and exhibited with becoming reverence, that through such love and such sacrifice, He may be prepared in due time for the greater Mysteries, the Supreme and inward Initiation.
May our study and practice of the Divine Mysteries as found in the Holy Jewish Qabalah, the Alchemy of the Ancients, the Rosicrucian Philosophy, the Archetypes of Egypt and Greece, the Sacred Mysticism of Christianity and the Ceremonial Magic of the Medieval Grimoires maintain us in our search for the Quintessence, the Stone of the Philosophers, True Wisdom, Perfect Happiness, the Summum Bonum.
We give Thee thanks, Supreme and Gracious God, for the manifestation of Thy Light which is vouchsafed to us, for that measure of knowledge which Thou hast revealed to us concerning Thy Mysteries, for those guiding Hands which raise the corner of the Veil and for the firm hope of a further Light beyond.
Ex Deo Nascimur, in Jesu morimur, per spiritum sanctum reviviscimus. |

| Quote: | | The true Golden Dawn Tradition is revealed only to the initiate. Initiation into the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn is the mystical doorway to deep esoteric knowledge and the power of the magi of light. Our Order is true to the tradition of the Mysteries of Light and the classical Golden Dawn current of energy. Our Order provides the seeker temples worldwide, teaching sanctuaries, online classes, personal instruction and astral initiation wherever there is no temple nearby. |

| Quote: | The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is the First or "Outer" Order of the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega®, founded in Paris by S.L. MacGregor Mathers in 1906. The Alpha et Omega is presently distinguished as the only order offering education and physical initiation in the entire "three order" system originally conceived for the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from the 0=0 grade of Neophyte through the 10=1 grade of Ipsissimus.
Unlike other orders, students of the Alpha et Omega begin to practice magick immediately upon entering our First Order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, then work a secret, magickal and alchemical curriculum in our Second Order, the R.R. et A.C., derived entirely from unpublished Hermetic and Rosicrucian esoteric transmissions. Select students may then be invited into the Alpha et Omega's "Third Order" which teaches and practices the sexual mysteries of Hermetic "Inner" Alchemy and Alchemical Theurgy, originally obtained by S.L. MacGregor Mathers from the "Secret Chiefs" in Paris.
Although the Rosicrucian Order Alpha et Omega has always been based in Europe, it nonetheless operates a world wide network of temples of its outer order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, including in the United States and Canada. The HOGD/A+O exclusively performs physical initiations in real temples.
The Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega today sets a standard of excellence by encouraging all Golden Dawn-based groups, temples, and orders to maintain the same high standards as our outer order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. To protect the public, the Alpha et Omega offers formal affiliation to those groups willing to maintain the highest ethical standards, to preserve the integrity of physical initiation in real temples, and to protect the purity of traditional Hermetic and Rosicrucian teachings. As a public service, the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega publishes a list of temples and orders that have been granted such formal affiliation with our order.
For students just beginning their esoteric journey we offer a free, public forum for solitary practitioners of Ritual Magick and Alchemy. For more serious students we offer on-line, supervised membership with qualification at a distance for initiation and grade advancement. Finally, we offer physical initiation through our world-wide network of chartered licensed temples of our Outer Order, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Where others leave off, the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega® just begins! |

From what i'm getting out of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Inc., they almost flatout say that they're copy-cats of the original (not too far from useing those words).
With all the movies and books coming out lately about Freemasons and Templars, i'm almost shocked that i've never heard of one about the Golden Dawn, they seem to be wrapped in about as much crap as the rest--besides having names that would make way better titles. |

Hey, I actually OWN that book!
It a much different order than the Freemasons as I understand the Freemasons. The book is about ritual magik (note the spelling with a K which denotes real magik as apposed to that fake stage magic stuff). Aliester Crowley was a member for a short while, I believe, before breaking off to make his own flavor of ritual magik. If I remember my history correctly, Israel Regardi, the author of the book, was severely chastised and disowned for revealing their secrets.
Their belief is that you go through 10 stages of the Tree of Live (also known as the Rosy Cross) called Sephiroth (singular is Sephira. Note that the plural Sephiroth, with the 22 paths, encompass the ENTIRE Tree of Life and may explain why they are STILL making new Final Fantasy games). You start out at the bottom stage as a Neophyte and work your way up to the top, which takes years of devotion to meditation and ritual magik. In the end, you become 'More than Human', an immortal god-thing, at which time you are to immediately retake physical form again and live out the rest of your life, telling no one. This is substantially similar to Crowley's belief system. The differences were mostly that Crowley incorporated things such as ritual sex and the like, using the energies released during sex to boost your magik.
What it all boils down to, basically, is a strict regimen of meditation until your mind is conditioned to the point where you begin to have 'experiences', much like my favorite whipping boy, fundamentalist religion. At some point I am sure that the die-hard followers of these belief systems actually believed that they had become 'More than Human' (a quote from either The Golden Dawn or one of Crowley's works, maybe both...it's been a long time) and, to prevent themselves from discovering their lie to themselves, have always followed the rule that they must retake physical form immediately and live out the rest of their lives, assured in the knowledge that they are, in fact, far more important than the other people around them. A quick note, retaking physical form in no way negates their god-thing status. They are still god-things, just now wrapped in a physical form (which they can dissipate and remake at will) to keep people from asking questions and to maintain their mandatory standard of secrecy upon reaching this level. |
