| This weekend is actually going to be pretty hectic, so I'm not sure I'll see it. Eventually, yes. But perhaps not until next week. I was actually wondering if Raven had posted one yet... |

| Okay, I saw it. I'm usually not a huge Batman fan, but this movie was definitely worth the 12 bucks it cost to get us both in (small town prices). There was enough good plot there for 2 regular movies. The plot was good for a change, the actors (the main characters anyway) were superb and the Joker made the movie. It's too bad he'll never play the part again. It was some of the best acting I've ever seen. |

well... i finally saw it, and holly crap. first... it should not be seen when you're running through the whole day on only 18 minutes of sleep... although, i managed.
It was completely insane. i actually liked that they never gave the Joker a back-story, he was always a character that could easily survive without one (besides, only a select few geeks even know the Joker's back-story from the comics... without referencing wiki). I ended up thinking i was gonna hate the way they were going to do Two-face's character, because of the way they were setting it up didn't really portray the comic book version (and i'm still a bit angry about the last movie version of him), but the way it ended up... i just loved it... it didn't go with the comic book version of schizophrenia, instead it just brought out true insane rage of a normal person... it was completely perfect. The whole thing had a great graphic novel feel to it... the portrayal of the Joker definitly had the Frank Miller influence in it. I have to say, in all, i actually think this one was ten times better than even the last one... they have finially figured out how to do Batman right... |

Saw it last night. I was joking because of the great reviews when I said I'd wait to rent it. Now I can say I should have.
I truly honestly have no idea what is supposed to be so great about it. The Joker was very wll played, but, he's not the joker, definitely not how the joker should be. Nicholsons was certainly much closer to the true spirit of the joker.
But Ledgers version of him was very well done. His scenes were the only part of the movie I enjoyed.
I found it much too jumbled, with a lot of uneccessary fluff. They tried wayyyyyy too hard to make this a "serious" movie, and ended up making a disjointed film, that after the first 30 minutes literally left me bored, and nudging my GF so she would stop nodding off. I would have had no problem with having a pause button to I could go outside for a smoke, and some munchies.
Bale was ok, but not great. So joker was supposed to be breaking down the good guys, filling em with guilt for allowing folks to die. Please, the only reason it worked at all in the film, is because it was in the characters script. Bale goes from the determined vigilante to the self questioning guilt ridden antihero in the blink of an eye. It's so jarring, you end up thinking, "what happend, what'd I miss", then realize, "Oh, I forgot, he's acting like that because that's what the Joker is trying to do to him".
About the only scene that was memorable at all for me, was the Joker leaving the hospital in a nurses uniform.
Oh well, to each his own I guess. It just struck me as boring, plodding, and too long, with a few shining moments thanks to Ledger. |

| Ever read Frank Miller's work? As i mentioned, this is where the Joker character in the movie came from (this was mentioned while they were in the process of making the movie)... in Frank Miller's version, the Joker was more cynically insane. Nicholson's version on the other hand just proved what Tim Burton admitted to (accidentally), that he has never read a comic book before in his life. I’ve encountered many versions of the Joker by way of comic books and many cartoons, but have never seen a version that even came close to what Nicholson did… he wasn’t insane, he was just a guy with an acid bleached face. |

Yes I've read Frank Miller. Daredevil, Darknight, and several others. The Darknight graphic novel was an incredible work.
Ledger however reduced the Joker to an intelliegent thug with no class, no style, just a pure desire for chaos. Which is nonsense because his actions are meticulously well planned. And really, how many minions are going to hook up with you and help in your plans, if you constantly kill them just as gladly as you kill your enemies?
Nicholsons Joker was very much insane, just not pure psychotic behaviour for the sake of being psychotic. He had a reason and method for his craziness, and he retained enough of his humanity to still allow the joker to have some of the style and humour he was supposed to have. Take away Ledgers makeup and scars, and he could have been no different than any psychotic sociopath, just affecting his environment on a grand scale.
Nicholsons joker was much more than just a guy with an acid scarred face. He had history with Wayne, that predated both of their incarnations as villan and hero. Theirs was a birth that could be tied to eachother, and his Joker had much better reasons for fixation on Batman, than just wanting him gone so he could be more free to cause destruction. So he didnt kill indiscriminately, so what? Common street thugs do it all the time.
In the comics, Joker was insane, but he wasnt just a psychotic wearing makeup. He was much more than that.
Like I said, Ledgers joker is great, it was the only really interesting part of the movie. But he isnt the joker.
I could tell the movie was not going to resonate with me, when I found I couldn't emphasize with ANY of the characters. I found myself not caring one bit who got killed. |
