Marine expelled over YouTube puppy video
Second Marine punished for clip showing dog thrown off cliff in Iraq

updated 2 hours, 47 minutes ago
HONOLULU - The Marine Corps said Wednesday it was expelling one Marine and disciplining another for their roles in a video showing a Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq.

The 17-second video posted on YouTube drew sharp condemnation from animal rights groups when it came to light in March.

The clip shows two Marines joking before one hurls the puppy into a rocky gully. A yelping sound is heard as it flips through the air.

"That's mean. That's mean, Motari," an off-camera Marine is heard telling the Marine who tossed the black and white dog. The off-camera Marine snickered slightly afterward.

Lance Cpl. David Motari, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Bay, is "being processed for separation" from the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps said in a news release. He also received unspecified "non-judicial punishment."

The Marine Corps didn't say what role Motari played in the clip.

The video was viewed tens of thousands of times before YouTube took it down because of a violation of the site's terms of use.

"The actions seen in the Internet video are contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine and will not be tolerated," Marine Corps Base Hawaii said in a news release. "The vast majority of Marines conduct their duties with honor and compassion that makes American people proud."

The second Marine, Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, also received unspecified "non-judicial" punishment.

Encarnacion is assigned to the Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

First Lt. Binford Strickland, a Marine Corps Base Hawaii spokesman, said the service may not reveal what roles the two men played in the video because that was part of the investigation. He said releasing such information would violate the Privacy Act.

Strickland declined to provide details about the disciplinary measures taken against the men for the same reason.

And before anyone tries to say it, no, the war did not cause this... aside from the war providing a cliff, this dude was clearly a douche before the war ever happened...

That's easily one of the sickest, most inhumane things ever. I think equal treatment is in order. We have some real nice cliffs here in California that would work, but I know about this one in Arizona...

It's a shame that of all the fine men and women representing our country assholes like this are the only ones you ever hear about. For every story like this I'm sure they could print ten thousand or more about service men and women doing something heroic or exemplary, but that doesn't sell papers or grab ratings.

I know what you mean. I refuse to watch crap like that, not only to not be responsible for helping to propagate such things, but on grounds of simple personal morality (notice I used the non-judgmental qualifier "personal" to avoid the illusion that I believe I am somehow qualified to dictate morality to the masses). I'm the only person I know who didn't follow the O.J. circus. I absolutely refused to disrespect the families of our fallen soldiers by looking up and watching the released video of our soldiers being beheaded, but that one goes a little further than just being in poor taste. I take no pleasure in seeing people or animals die or in seeing the aftermath of death. According to my wife's list of "warning signs" that's the one thing that kept me from becoming a serial killer. Seriously, I got like 8 out of 10 or something on that list. I couldn't sleep for about 6 months because I was afraid I'd kill myself in my sleep. I still don't quite trust me.

eeehhhh....... he was the one doing the actual throwing?.........

I read one of his excuses not too long ago, : the puppy was going to die anyway of a disease or run over by a vehicle"...

Bullshit. Immediate example, there was a fuckload of press about the soldier who saved a dog who had been tortured. Even got enough in donations to get the dog shipped to the states. That story wass rammed down our throats for weeks. Just like this one will be.

The armed services are no better or worse than the people they defend. Just like us, they have their fair share of assholes and heroes. If the assholes APPEAR to get more press, it is because we have done such a good job of setting the expectations that they are ALL heroes.

Sorry, but this hero/villain crap doesn't cut it with me. And before anyone thinks that I don't respect our military people, remember I was one too, so I know the truth of the service, NOT the fucking myths.

It is a shitty job with shitty pay that has some grand moments along with the hellish. Just like being a cop, or a firefighter, or a paramedic, or... well you get it.

Or you don't.

Rant off.

I do however, completely agree with this philosophy.

Maybe it's just me, Hobbs, but all I seem to hear about is the dregs. And I KNOW these people have to be doing good things on a regular basis. I guess when it comes to my country and its defenders I am very idealistic. I do have high expectations for our soldiers and our leaders. I see my country as a shining jewel to be polished and shown proudly to the world. Unfortunately, most of our leaders see it as a bejeweled toilet seat which the next guy will clean.

No worries, asmodee. I know where you are coming from, I used to "live there".

I wake up every morning to CNN, I read the Drudge Report, I scan the news throughout the day. I get my information from at least four different sources every day. Doing so, fine tunes one's bullshit detector.

While negativity sells, there ARE positive stories. Maybe not a perfect 50/50. But the press isn't nearly as lopsided as the press will have you believe. Intro to Communications in colleges teach that EVERYONE has an agenda. Even so, I see more positive stories than I used to. Maybe they aren't the lead stories, but they do air/print them with some regularity. Heck, every morning, Robin Meade "Salutes the Troops" on CNN Headline News, several times throughout the broadcast.

As for idealizing the US and the military (the world in general), I prefer to do my best to see them as they are, not what they "should be". It doesn't mean I am happy with where we are today, but rather much less stressed/depressed when things aren't what they "ought" to be.

I see the glass as being at "50% of capacity" rather than what it is "not" - full vs empty.

It has taken me a lifetime to get this perspective, and now that I am here, I prefer no other way of dealing with the world.

Not in any way should this be taken as a "my way is best" or a "deal with it" tone. Just sharing where I am coming from.

Peace Love and Understanding to everyone, but death to evil!

Hob, have you read "Tommy" by Rudyard Kipling? I think you'll like it. If not, I'll post it here. One of my favorite poems simply because it shows soldiers as they, not "plaster saints".

Quote:
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

I saw the puppy throwing headline the last day or so and would not click on it. When I clicked on this link I purposely didn't read the article but just your reponses to it. I'm glad i skipped it.

Cruel behaviour by those who commit it has always perplexed me. And royaly pissed me off. Maybe I'm a softy. But here at work there's two areas where ducks might hang out. I overheard in a crowded breakroom over two weeks ago (maintenance crew talking amongst themselves) that trapped ducks, momma and babbies eventaully died of thirst because they couldn't escape.

I couldn't corner them at that time to ask just who the fuck saw them trpped and didn't help? I REALLY hope that's not the case. Anyway, I don't know the last name of the guy who spoke about it si can't look him up. I've been watching for him though. I think about thos littel ones slowly dying about once or twice a day. In fact, I just got an idea.
