I have been racking my brain over this for a week and just can't figure it out. My main computer here at the shop went down a couple of weeks ago and I built a new one to replace it. I can't get the network shares to be the same way that they used to be.
On the old computer, I would type in //ComputerName from another computer and it would pop up with a login screen. I would put in the username and password for the computer I was logging in to and then it would show me a list of the network shares, which had the permissions I set up.
On the new computer, when I type in //ComputerName from another computer it simply displays a list of the network shares. I have tried setting the permissions to allow only that username to access the shares, but that is not working. It still pops up with the list of shared folders and, to top it off, I get an error message about not having permission to view that share when I click on it.
For my situation, mapping a network drive with a different username and password is not an option. I have disabled simple file sharing and played with the permissions in both the sharing area and the file area. It is Windows XP Pro. I really need to find the setting that makes it pop up the login screen before you can even see the shares and follow permissions accordingly after that. My nephew, who is a Microsoft certified network administrator, hasn't got a clue. Do any of you? |

I know what you're talking about because i've had to deal with something that sounds like your situation before, i was able to fix it, but can't formulate how i did it right now. I'll have to rack my memory for you, i'll get back to you on this.

Finally! Someone knows what I'm talking about! My nephew has been giving me the "you're probably an idiot" support telling me to turn off simple file sharing and set permissions and such. Any pointing you can do in a general direction would be nice. Google is failing me on this one.

I just remembered this and it might be an important clue. With the way I did have it set up, I was completely unable to access network shares in Windows 98 and ME. It would not come up with a login screen. It would just say I didn't have permission, which was perfectly all right with me.
I think it has something to do with the remote machine automatically logging in to SMB with the credentials the user logged onto it with, from what little bit I have been able to find out so far.

I have found the solution for this, if anyone is interested. You have to edit the local policies under Security Options and change "Accounts: Guest account status" to "Disabled" so that people can't log on anonymously. I don't know why you would want someone eyeballing your shares if they didn't have permission to use them anyway, but that's apparently the default. The Guest account, by the way, has never been enabled on this computer. This is apparently a separate setting from that. Well, at least when I need it again another 2 years from now, I know where I can find the solution now...if only I remember where I posted it...

I knew what you were talking about, just had no clue what the hell to do about it. Thanks for posting the fix.

No problem. One more little tip, you may need to reboot both the serving computer and the client computer (if you previously tried to access this share from that computer) after changing this setting to get it to work.
