how did a bunch of dead starfish that die every year become "so many marine animals"?

star-shaped worms... that's amazing. I wonder if they freak out when the sidewalks are covered with dead earthworms after it rains... because they're so amazing... |

| So if they start getting rare we toss a few in the blender. That ought to up the numbers pretty quick. |

I'm not sure if it's the case with these starfish, but mass die-offs are common in nature, and for natural reasons (non-anthrogenetic). It depends on who's declaring it to be anomalous and whether they are qualified to do so.
When I was living in rural Michigan there was a two week period where dead birds were found all over a multi-county area (1973-4ish, around Big Rapids MI), I mean thousands and thousands of dead birds and from several species. Freaked people out, but in the end they determined it was poisoning from some weird bacterial 'infection' on local grains like corn, wheat, rye, barley. They supposed that birds probably had an evolved immunity as long as the problem microbe was found only in the small numbers of wild grains, but human cultivated grain fields put far more than they could handle into the birds and into what the birds ate. Birds hadn't had time to develop defenses since large scale grain farming in that area is only a few centuries old. (Do not trust me on this as these are 35 yr old memories from a guy who's not sure what he had for lunch yesterday).
To this day it still happens in Michigan that every fall, in november if I recall, thousands of whitetail deer die of lead poisoning. Weird. |
