I know they didn't used to like to give them out voluntarily because the film was expensive. These days most x-ray machines are digital, though, and if they are not the old Mylar type, they may be just printed out. If that's the case it should be no problem. If you're not sure you can probably get your hands on them by telling them that you are seeing a new doctor and he wants to see the x-rays. In the dentist office, anyway, they will just hand them over. They are part of your medical records and pretty much useless after a few months, so there is no real reason to return them.
