There are dozens of "numbers stations," some of which have been in business for decades. Yet no government or private agency has ever acknowledged them.
The stations broadcast in a variety of formats (three, four, and five digits, etc.) in languages ranging from English and Spanish to Czech, Korean, and Serbo-Croatian. The voice is often female and its unchanging inflection suggests that it may be machine-generated, like those wrong-number recordings used by the phone company.
At least some of the numbers stations are broadcasting coded messages. The messages have a definite beginning and end, start with an indication of how many number groups the message will contain, repeat each group carefully, and use standard-sized code groups (i.e., four or five digits), a universal feature of modern cryptography.

I think you're in big trouble, young man.
No, seriously... that is pretty interesting, maybe only 'cause I haven't a freakin' clue.
If it's bad guys of some sort -criminals, terrorists, spies, etc. -it would be very easy to triangulate and determine their position, then arrest, investigate, indict, etc.
However, if it's the good guys -DIA, DEA, MI5, CIA, Interpol, Homeland Security, the Mounties, etc. -there's nobody to shut them down and they could broadcast as they do, at will. Coded messages, some of them the message, some of them the code to use. Then again, surely there are better ways to communicate important intel.
Maybe it's some sort of international short wave bingo, you know... A-5... B-27.... T-11.... G-32... |

In my mind in order of probability either a hoaxer amongst nerds or someone is keeping an emergency broadcast signal live and tested for later use or it is a null signal ("we are a go for bringing the drugs to the airfield every second weds if Yosemite Sam is on") or there is a signal embedded that we can't read.
It is freaky to hear it though .... and these are real conspiracies in that they exist |
