Yes,
A Murphy bed is one that fold up into a cabinet in the wall in small hotel rooms, in the 30'-50's.
Murphy, Murphy, Murphy...yes we all Miss Princess Diana I think she symbolized the fairy tale we all bought as young girls. Prince charming, cinderella , happy ever after, dead mother in law ,etc etc etc.
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FEMININE HYGIENE SPRAY.
Dysfunctional women marries ugly but rich man.
Look who he wakes up to each morning now...Chamela you smella. |

*ahem*
I hate it when threads go sour...
... so at risk of being seen as a pot-stirrer, I would like to offer my own take on what Nikaria was saying, and also some bonus conspiracy insight. Bonus! Conspiracy! Insight! C'mon now, you know you want to hear this:
Murphy, I can't believe Diana's gone, either. She was the most photographed woman in the world, her media presence was astonishing, her star quality was one of those happy accidents of looks and personality that can't be manufactured by any Hollywood machine... in short, she was a true icon. And when our icons prove to be mere mortals, it's a little disconcerting. She seemed to walk on air. How could she die in such a banal way? For pete's sake, what a crappy ending to a fairy tale. The Brothers Grimm would be aghast.
But on the other hand, look at what we were idolizing. And by this I don't mean to attack Diana as a person, I just mean let's look at what WE were going ga-ga for: a young, pretty girl who was tragically undereducated by design, who was entered into a power marriage without any real concept of what the deal actually was, whose greatest asset on entering the marriage was that her hymen was intact, for god's sake, and whose ability to charm the world rested mainly on her coy, blushing, deferential ingenue act while wearing pretty hats. Also, she didn't get fat like that Fergie chick, and she was a good breeder.
Wow. Never mind lambasting her - what does that say about US???
Diana wasn't a stupid woman - clearly, she knew how to manipulate situations to her advantage, and she knew how to make millions love her - it takes a certain amount of cunning and brains to pull that off. But her potential was capped at posing for Vogue and making the odd vacuous speech about land mines or AIDS, and her public thought that was great. Then Camilla Parker Bowles comes along and is, by all accounts, a fine companion for her new husband, at the very least able to keep up her end of a lively conversation, and yet she's mocked and hated for not being a pin-up girl. Christ almighty, people. What century are we living in?!?!?!?!?
My take on the whole conspiracy thing is that it was inevitable. We need a conspiracy because it's a much more palatable ending to the fairy tale than something as ignoble as "the people's Princess" dying from internal injuries after crashing in a Paris tunnel with her trashy nouveau riche boyfriend. How... un-Princesslike! Why, it's almost like the fairy tale wasn't true, after all... And we can't have that. Bring on the international spy plots!!!
I'm sorry Diana's not around anymore. I enjoyed her presence too, Murphy. I'll admit I bought a magazine if she was on the cover. If she gave a tell-all interview, I watched. She fascinated me. The concept of a beautiful princess who is doomed and vulnerable is very, very seductive, even in these modern times. It's the stuff of which fairy tales are made, and I guess we still need our fairy tales. But deep down I knew it was a guilty pleasure, and I knew that as fairy tales go, this one wouldn't have a good ending. RIP, Diana. We literally loved you to death. |
