I discovered this site many a years ago, and "purchased" Norton System Works 2000 off of it among a couple others. The site ended up going down not too long after that, but out of recent curiosity I happened to type in the address just for the sake of checking it (because I was looking for a new NSW and the thought crossed my mind). I was directed here: http://www.fcdsoft.com/
Oooo'buddy, it's a nice brand new Free-CDSoftware site. They don't have NSW at the moment, but they do have a bunch of other crap that I would like. Ooooo'golly, such a great Christmas present for me to discover this site again... I’m giddy.

Norton anything sucks. Even free I'd want my money back. Cool link though, I'll have to peruse the site later.

Any Norton utilities separately suck and are damn near useless... but bundled into a suite so everything works all together, it's like a Jesus program. Back when I have NSW2k, I could fix absolutely any problem a computer could come up with aside from the problem including a non-working CD-ROM drive. It was a great thing all the way until XP became mainstream and ruined it (didn't run on XP). Norton seemed to design their stuff so it'd only function the way you would want it to if you bought all the other programs to go with it—hence why even now I chose to check fcdsoft.com because I prefer to get passed an obvious set up when possible.

It's not that Norton products work only if you buy all the products and have them working together, Norton works well when the planets are in the proper alignment and the gods are smiling on you. NSW 2000 was good software. Before the year 2000, Norton was "the shit". It was in 2000 that they began "the crapening". They pulled out of it for a short while, putting out more or less decent products through 2003. In 2004 they raised their prices and dropped their quality. Now I would rather pay their asking price for garbage pickup to take Norton products away than to use their products for free.

Cool site, though. A flat $7.50 shipping per program and the 5th one is free. You can get 5 disks for $30. Nothing new or that exciting there, but some nice kids games and such. Definitely a cool find.

I've had Norton on my home computers and work computers for years and have had absolutely no problems what so ever, I don't know what you guys do to your computers to make them so Norton unfriendly, but they've never sucked on my computers like they have yours. Smile I've only used 2 others, Avast and McKaffy(sp) and those two sucked IMHO, I'm no techie by any means, but those two were nothing but nightmares.

McAfee sucks... their programs are closer to being viruses than anti-viruses...

Sky, try taking Norton off and see how much faster and better your computer runs.

I haven't had a Norton product on any of my computers for years. It's customer computers that I see it on. I don't know what Norton products you have, but different ones come with different quirks. For instance, a couple of years ago, Norton Internet Security would get an update, then jut quit working on the Internet until settings were changed. They still have that problem to a lesser extent when upgrading. I've already had 2 calls from people upgrading to Norton 360 whose shared printers no longer worked until I opened the ports again.

Like Yaish said, uninstall Norton and see how your computer runs then. It'll be like brand new! Then you can put on AVG Free Edition (for home use) and see what an antivirus should be like. It's small, does not slow your computer down (except when scanning), updates released multiple times a day, it's easy to report suspected files (which are ALWAYS detected a day or two after reporting them), never expires (so it doesn't "recommend" the next bigger package to what you have every time you renew), it's easy to tell when it's out of date, it's easy to update and, most importantly, it never bothers me with any information or message except when it knows it is out of date, but can't update for some reason (no connection) or it finds something nasty.

Norton is like a Gateway. When people tell me, "I've never had a problem with it," I simply say, "Then you are one of the lucky few." I used to rub up against them for luck, but that always seemed to get me injured, which didn't seem very lucky to me.

No computer has ever left my shop with McAfee still on it and no computer will if I have my way. Admittedly, I don't know much about it. All I know is that when I try to check for updates, it asks for login information. At that point I simply uninstall and replace it. Some companies just go overboard with the whole "login" thing. If the tech working on the system can't see if the antivirus is up to date, that makes the antivirus both useless and a liability. I have also seen McAfee products years out of date that just seem to happily run as though nothing is amiss, never warning the clueless user.

I use AVG now and it's been excellent. I've used Norton in the past and it was OK, but slowed my computer down, especially during update downloads. I scheduled the daily scans for the middle of the night, but it downloaded its own updates on its own schedule and at least once or twice a week my computer would slow up without warning or initial cause, till I figured out it was Norton. So, my experience with Norton can't be called bad, but AVG is so, so much better. Also, when I ditched Norton for another brand, the new brand found a boatload of viruses missed by Norton. When I recently went to AVG, it found about 33 bugs the previous system missed.
